The first decision is the test route—not the coaching package
IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training share Listening and Speaking, but their Reading and Writing tasks differ. Academic is normally used for higher education and professional registration; General Training is commonly used for migration, work and below-degree study. The receiving institution or authority—not a coaching provider—decides which result it accepts.
Before classes begin, record the destination, application type, required score in each skill, intended test date and current ability. If any of those are unknown, resolve them before buying a long package. This prevents a student from preparing for the wrong module or chasing an overall band while missing a minimum component score.
A preparation cycle should create evidence, not just attendance
A useful diagnostic samples all four skills under time limits. The resulting plan should identify specific weaknesses—for example, losing coherence in Writing Task 2, missing plural endings in Listening, or pausing too often in Speaking—then assign practice that can be checked. Weekly work should include timed production, feedback, correction and a repeat attempt.

A worked example: planning backwards from a conditional offer
Consider an Ahmedabad applicant who needs an overall 7.0 with no skill below 6.5 in ten weeks. A diagnostic shows Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Speaking 6.0 and Writing 5.5. Repeating generic full tests would hide the main risk. A better plan allocates early weeks to paragraph control, task response and recorded speaking, keeps lighter maintenance work for Listening, and introduces full timed mocks only after correction patterns improve.
The judgment is simple: course duration should follow the size of the verified gap and the hours a learner can sustain, not a universal “one month” or “three month” promise.
